I’ve never gone through boot camp (and all the hell I hear it is). I’ve never been in a war, been shot at, been injured or paid the ultimate price for the defense of my country.
I don’t care what you achieve in your life, my personal opinion is that it pales in comparison to people who proclaim their love of their country by agreeing to serve and defend it and often, for people they don’t even know (that would be you & me). It is the ultimate definition of sacrifice.
You mean this person who I don’t even know is willing to DIE so I am able to live freely?
I’ll tell you with certainty- I don’t have that kind of devotion or dedication. I would have made a terrible soldier- I’m a marshmallow, couldn’t have handled the work, the agony, the uncertainty. I couldn’t have made the sacrifice.
So, thank God you’re better than me. That you could do what I couldn’t. Your selflessness is amazing to me, and inspiring. I applaud you and although I’ll never truly “get” the meaning of Veteran’s Day, I do get that you’re doing something that is selfless and beautiful. That makes you a hero in my book. And we desperately need heroes.
