Note: This is a guest post from Ryan Hanley, an insurance professional with Murray Group Insurance Services in Albany, New York. Ryan and I have become friends via our various social media activities. Thank you Ryan for your tireless efforts in promoting the independent agency system, for giving the industry a much needed kick in the pants and for supporting me. I look forward to the day I can personally shake your hand!
People ask me all the time, “Why did you decide to become an insurance agent?” And they always have this peculiar look on their face like I decided to dig ditches for a living or sort garbage…
Like why would someone ever want to become an insurance agent?
A frequent response I give to this question is, “Because insurance is Funny!”
Insurance is seriously a funny business. As an insurance agent your job is to interact with people, as many people as you can, as often as you can, for as long as you can. Like if you rub up against someone for long enough eventually through osmosis they will become your insurance client.
Well, in the four years I’ve been an insurance agent I’ve realized it doesn’t quite work like that.
But the point is you have to be around people a lot to be successful and this is where the “funny” comes in… People are Crazy and yes that means YOU people… You are crazy and say crazy things and make crazy decisions and I find all of that to be very funny but not really in a Laughing kind of way.
Because here’s the deal:
Purchasing insurance is one of the most important decisions you will make in your entire life and the honest to goodness truth is 8 out of 10 of you don’t give a crap about it. Eighty percent of you think insurance is a scam and a waste of money and you hate it and you can’t spare 30 minutes of your precious time to sit down with an amazing independent insurance agent like Carrie Reynolds to properly protect yourself and your family and your business…
That my friends… I find to be very Funny!
You Don’t Think That’s Funny
The truth is, I don’t think its funny either, I think it’s sad. Maybe I was being a bit apocalyptic before, but it was to make a point. The point being that Most (not all mind you), but most people do not put the thought, time and effort necessary into their insurance program to properly protect the assets they value the most.
I think that is funny in a really sad way.
You are not 100% to blame for sure. Insurance Carriers have been hammering you for years with an avalanche of Radio, TV, Print, and Online Ads that preach the same mantra:
“Insurance is all the same and the only thing that matters is Price!”
HA! What a joke! Now that is LOL (laugh out loud for you non-internet speakers) funny!
It has been my mission (and mission of amazing independent insurance agents like Carrie Reynolds) to break America’s Insurance Buying Trance… And open insurance consumer’s eyes to the reality that Insurance is NOT a Commodity!
So how do you realize the value of insurance? How do you get something back for all the insurance dollars you pay every year?
Work with an independent insurance agent. It’s that simple. Independent insurance agents help you weigh the cost-benefit of the coverage options available to you. Independent insurance agents help you to become an informed insurance consumer so when your Worst Day happens you don’t find yourself SOL (not defining that one so you’ll have to look it up).
Unless you’ve worked in the Insurance Industry most of your insurance acumen has likely come from hearsay and rumor and myth and your father’s cousin’s nephew who once had this thing happen…
Don’t listen to well-meaning insurance morons.
Talk to a professional independent insurance agent like Carrie Reynolds and properly protect yourself, your family and your business.
Purchasing insurance any other way is just NOT funny…
